RISE Academy in Covington, Georgia, is an alternative program school serving grades 6-12. Students attending RISE Academy have had academic and/or behavioral challenges that have made learning in a traditional environment difficult. The school offers small classes and works with each individual student to create learning goals and establish a tailored learning environment.
The motto of RISE Academy is “Second Chances…New Beginnings,” and it is this motto that forms the foundation of the school’s philosophy. Staff members work intentionally to provide an environment that is conducive to learning for all students. The school focuses on building relationships with students and families, striving to make a positive impact and difference in the lives of all their students.
Using PBIS Rewards to Help Students RISE
RISE Academy has been a PBIS Rewards school since the school’s inception in 2017. The school uses PBIS Rewards to promote positive student behavior and academic success, all while holding students accountable to three PBIS expectations: Being Respectful, Responsible, and Remarkable.
PBIS encourages motivation, self-confidence, and self-discipline, and PBIS Rewards makes it easy for any staff member to recognize any student, anywhere, any time they exhibit the school’s expectations.
Additionally, RISE incorporates PBIS Rewards’ SEL/Status check-in component each day to assess students’ social and emotional well-being. Staff members work to encourage, motivate, inspire, lead, and promote the gifts, talents, and skills of students to help them succeed.

RISE-ing to the Challenge of Maintaining a PBIS School Store
As students exhibit the three schoolwide expectations, they receive recognition for their efforts. While many of the items offered in the school store are tangible rewards or experiences, the school has found that the most important element is consistent positive feedback. Staff provide students with positive feedback on a regular basis, for actions such as greeting adults, completing assignments, passing quizzes, pushing in their chair, and more. This praise is typically accompanied by PBIS points.
Funding the school’s PBIS store is a collaborative effort. Fortunately, parents and community partners believe in PBIS and show that belief by contributing and donating to the store. The school also creates free and low-cost incentives in the form of experiences and events.

Leveraging the Power of One at RISE Academy
Each student attending RISE benefits from a welcoming and supportive learning environment and a dedicated teaching staff focused on reaching the whole student. This means not only academic support and instruction, but also social and emotional guidance and encouragement.
