Creating a safe, positive learning environment is non-negotiable. When students feel supported and recognized, they’re more likely to succeed, not just academically, but socially and emotionally. But building an environment like this takes more than good intentions. It takes structure, consistency, and the right tools.
At Mango Elementary School, staff had tried traditional PBIS (positive behavioral interventions and supports) methods like paper “dolphin dollars” to reinforce positive behavior. But without consistency, data visibility, or staff buy-in, their efforts fell short. Students gamified the system—some even traded counterfeit dolphin dollars in the bathroom. Teachers were frustrated, and administrators couldn’t see what was working.
So Mango Elementary made a change.
In this blog, we’ll explore how the school transformed its approach using PBIS Rewards, a digital behavior management platform from Navigate360. The results speak for themselves: a 76% decrease in referrals, a 25% reduction in suspensions, and a culture where students—and staff—are motivated, engaged, and emotionally supported.

What Is a Positive Behavior Management System?
A positive behavior management system is a digital, schoolwide framework that reinforces appropriate, prosocial behavior through clear expectations, consistent recognition, and tiered support. It helps schools to reduce disruptions, increase instructional time, and ensure that students understand what is expected of them across all settings.
When implemented effectively, these systems promote a safe and predictable learning environment, allow teachers to focus more on instruction, and give students a clear roadmap to success. Digital platforms like PBIS Rewards help schools take this to the next level by streamlining rewards, tracking data in real time, and giving both staff and students the tools they need to stay engaged. PBIS Rewards is grounded in evidence-based practices that align with national behavior support frameworks.
These systems also ensure that students understand how their behavior aligns with classroom expectations. They help students learn routines, recognize cause and effect, and build social-emotional skills through repetition and positive reinforcement.
Christina Salerno, Behavioral Resource Teacher at Mango, explained it simply: “PBIS Rewards created a common language… We actually got a 100% on our PBIS walkthrough because our students and staff knew our expectations—‘Be respectful, be responsible, be safe’—and they hear them every day.”
Why Traditional Behavior Programs Fall Short
Before adopting a digital system, Mango Elementary used paper “dolphin dollars” as part of their rewards strategy. While the intention was positive, the results were inconsistent at best.
Students lost tickets or forgot to redeem them. Teachers used the system at different rates, creating equity gaps. Administrators had little visibility into who was being rewarded—or how often. And data tracking for behavior trends or tiered interventions was almost nonexistent.
“I noticed kids were making counterfeits,” Salerno said with a laugh. “They told me, ‘We trade in the bathroom.’ That’s when we knew it wasn’t working.”
Mango needed a system that not only reinforced positive behaviors but also gave staff a consistent and efficient way to track them.
Real Results with a Digital Behavior Management Platform
Mango Elementary made the switch to PBIS Rewards, a digital platform that digitizes the entire behavior tracking and rewards process. Their new approach included a three-tiered system of daily points, school store incentives, and fun raffles and events. Clear expectations were reinforced building-wide, and teachers could award points instantly from any device.
“It was very quick and efficient,” said Salerno. “I told my principal, ‘We have to have this app. I’m not doing the store without it.’”
The results? A 43% drop in referrals, 100% walkthrough success (meaning all classrooms were actively using the platform), and better on-time attendance thanks to morning incentives.
PBIS Rewards created a feedback loop that strengthened relationships and built consistency from class to class. When students learn in a predictable, positive environment, they’re more likely to stay engaged and motivated.
Building Schoolwide Buy-In
One of Mango’s biggest wins was how quickly the entire school community got on board. The new system helped support educators by reducing the time spent on managing behavior manually and increasing opportunities to engage students positively. Staff felt more confident in reinforcing behavior expectations consistently across all classrooms.
“Students were bugging teachers to give them points. That’s how we knew it was working.” — Kimberly Parke, Principal, Mango Elementary
Peer-led training also helped hesitant staff gain confidence. Once teachers saw how easy it was to integrate into their routine, participation skyrocketed. Digital tools helped streamline their classroom management strategies, reducing effort and maximizing impact.
Consistent classroom rules, supported by clear expectations and regular feedback, gave students the structure they needed to thrive.
SEL Integration and Emotional Support
Beyond addressing disruptive behavior, Mango Elementary used PBIS Rewards to support students’ emotional well-being. The platform allowed for status check-ins, where students could indicate how they were feeling each day.
Counselors and interventionists received real-time notifications when students marked negative emotions, allowing for quick, targeted support. This emotional data informed MTSS decisions and gave families a clearer picture of how their child was doing throughout the week.
With digital tracking, teachers could identify students who needed additional behavioral interventions before challenges escalated. The check-in process created more opportunities for meaningful connection and helped build a supportive, responsive environment for every student.
Incentives That Actually Work (and Don’t Break the Budget)
The PBIS Rewards store became a game-changer. Open twice a week before school, it helped with on-time attendance. One student who regularly arrived late told Salerno, “I’m here, I’m here!” just to make it in time to shop.
Not every reward has to cost money. At Mango, the most popular incentives included free passes for Lego time, 3D printing, media assistant jobs, or a VIP seat in class. Larger events like the Monster Mash dance or Popsicle pop-ups gave students something to look forward to, while still reinforcing their daily efforts.
Teachers contributed by donating small items or repurposing things from home, keeping the system sustainable without sacrificing excitement. What mattered most was consistency—students knew the rewards were real, attainable, and celebrated across the school.
The Power of a Positive System
A positive classroom behavior management system isn’t just about fewer referrals. It enhances teaching and learning by creating an environment where expectations are clear, feedback is immediate, and instructional time is protected.
Mango Elementary’s story shows how the right digital platform can:
- Increase schoolwide consistency
- Drive staff and student engagement
- Strengthen emotional support systems
- Deliver real, measurable results
The outcome? A thriving culture of positivity. Mango’s three expectations—respect, responsibility, and safety—became part of daily language. Students could articulate what they earned points for. Teachers had a reliable way to reinforce behavior. Administrators had the data to back decisions.
From student engagement to staff participation, from emotional check-ins to on-time attendance—every element of the school day improved.
If your school is struggling with paper tickets, inconsistent expectations, or disengaged staff, it might be time to rethink your approach. A digital-first, schoolwide behavior management system can create clarity, build momentum, and help your students and staff thrive.
Want to Build a System That Actually Works?
If your school is struggling with inconsistent PBIS practices, paper tracking, or disengaged staff, it might be time to go digital. As Christina put it: “It’s a very simple system. The kids love it. And it works.”
